Atlanta-based artist and designer Merry Lake was born in Cynthiana, Kentucky where she lived an idyllic childhood playing in the trees, streams and the cemetery in her backyard.
At an early age, she was taught to sew by her grandmother Louise, great aunt Martha and mother Sue. Her 'adopted grandmother' Ruby taught her how to take scraps of fabric and turn them into anything...most often tiny doll clothes which usually ended up being worn by kittens.
Equipped with an extensive background in studio art, a lifetime of collecting vintage clothing and accessories and a desire to make a living from creating, Merry started designing fabric handbags in 2005. Her business grew and evolved, and now her collections of leather handbags are made in New York City.
Merry is proud to keep the production of her bags in the United States. She also likes to keep some aspects of each bag handmade and one-of-a-kind. Each bag label is hand-printed, and the Winter 2009 Collection features an antique or vintage key on each bag (recycle & reuse!) and a copper heart designed by Merry and brought to life by jewelry designer Holly Clark of Hclark Designs.
Merry Lake handbags are made to be carried and loved for a very long time. With use, the luxury-grade leather will develop a rich and beautiful patina. The styles are fresh, with details such as unique shapes and distinctive stitching patterns, but at the same time they are new classics and will stay current for years to come.
